BMW PGA Championship

24th to 27th May 2012

Tournament information

THE COURSE:

West Course.  7,251yrds par 71.
Location:  Wentworth Golf Club, Surrey, England.

Opened in 1926 Wentworth’s West Course boasts a rich history.  It hosted the 1953 Ryder Cup, the World Matchplay between 1964 and 2007 and the BMW PGA Championship since 1984.  Designed by Harry Colt, the course was altered by Ernie Els in 2005 and again in 2010 but not without its fair share of controversy.  As a flagship stop on The European Tour each year and with dedicated TV coverage, the West Course remains one of the most recognisable UK courses.

The closing two holes on the West Course are both par 5s which often leads to a dramatic conclusion.  The 18th is 539yrds, but it is a far more daunting hole since the Els alterations.  With water now in front of a green that has been raised, going for it in two has become much more of a risk and reward shot.  A 4, 4 finish, which was often considered common place, is now a real achievement.
